“My child is only three!” “We are not ready for this!” ... At first mention of the idea of their young child performing in a music recital, some parents panic. “How can we discreetly quit lessons before we get close to that recital day?” they ask themselves. “Ummm... I think we booked a holiday for that week, sorry,” they report to their teacher. I have seen the shifting eyes and twitching muscles and heard the stuttering speech and anxious thoughts. Some parents cannot imagine how Music for Young Children teachers can combine their motto of making music a “happy habit” with young children preparing for and performing in a public recital ...until they experience the joy and positive energy which come from sharing their child’s successes and sharing in the successes of other children, of giving and receiving praise and recognition for the children’s accomplishments. They have no concept of a teacher allowing their child to display only those aspects of their music learning they are very comfortable displaying and not reassuring them to participate in any way in which they are not comfortable. Music for Young Children teachers are committed to making the first recital and subsequent recitals a positive experience for all students. The recital experience is valuable educationally not only for the performance experience it provides a child but is equally important in training a new generation of audiences. Students are taught how to act and respond in concert settings and soon grow into informed audience members and concert participants. Music for Young Children teachers are skilled at structuring their recitals to accommodate young children’s attention spans and interests as well as older children’s interests. They often include audience participation and action songs for everyone to enjoy being part of. They include musical experiences to keep young and old alike alert and interested. Music for Young Children recitals are a very valuable learning experience for all, and, believe it or not, are a fun, low stress, exciting addition to the year of music instruction. Definitely an event not to miss! written by Elizabeth Dettweiler Hon. B. Mus.
